A close encounter with “Beauty & Brains”

Many a men crave to have a woman in their life who has “Beauty & Brains” and more still crave someone who meets both these criteria. I am no different either. I have met a few girls with both these criteria’s and also worked with a few of them. But today was the best of all of them because she not only embodied “Beauty & Brains” but also was a renowned celebrity and a prospective Tollywood Actress.

I had been to Hyderabad to attend the 16th National HRD Network Annual Conference and also to participate in the Best of Breed HR Practices competition being conducted by NHRDN (incidentally we-Schneider Electric won the first prize in the competition). The conference was spread over 3 days and many a eminent speakers largely from the HR fraternity spoke and shared their thoughts and experience mostly revolving around the theme of “Energizing for Excellence”. For most part it was not so much energizing as most of what was shared was old wine in old bottle. Personally I didn’t find much of new ideas or Next Practices.

However we were really energized by 2 speakers who surprisingly were not from the HR fraternity. One of them was our former President Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam and the other was the women with “Beauty & Brains” and a renowned celebrity.

Many of us were wondering what would Ms. Vasuki Sunkavalli, Miss Universe 2011 pagent from India, would speak on and what relevance it was in bringing her to speak to an august gathering of leading HR professionals in the country. She proved us wrong.

She was asked to speak on Corporate Social Responsibility and Socially engaging Leaders.

She first feigned ignorance on the subject but came with a prepared speech and she held the audience with bated breathe for the next one hour or so. To my mind her was the best part of the 3 day conference and she really “energized” all of us with her “Beauty & Brains”.

For the beauty part she was a tall girl (wont be surprised if she is near 5’10), surprisingly not the fairest celebrity (wheatish complexion) and she made no effort to artificially hide it, slim with a perfect figure (otherwise she couldn’t have been a Miss India Universe representative) exuding with confidence, grace and humility (unlike many others who crave for attention). There was an air of unambiguousness about her and she was extremely approachable reaching out to all who wanted their share of her attention – posing for photographs or autograph or shaking hands.

In 2002, Vasuki enrolled at the Symbiosis International University in Pune, India for her Bachelors in Law degree. While in India, Vasuki did a series of internships at local law firms and at India’s National Human Rights Committee. In 2007, she moved to New Delhi to pursue a Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights from Global Institute of Intellectual Property. It was during this time that Vasuki was approached by members of the Indian fashion industry and she also started her modeling career. In 2009, Vasuki enrolled at New York University School of Law as a recipient of the prestigious Dean’s Scholarship to study International Law and Human Rights and graduated with an LLM degree. Upon graduating from NYU, she interned at the Human Rights Watch in NYC and went on to work as the Third Committee’s Research Assistant at the United Nations’ Permanent Mission of India.

A lawyer by profession. Specialises in International Arbitration. Which means she helps countries to arbitrate and settle disputes. Wow……

Here intellect part was greatly exposed when she started speaking and later on handled with aplomb the many questions that were fielded to her.

She said that we should not feel guilty about making profits- reminds of me what my uncle, late Dr.CK Prahalad told me. You need profit to share. Without money how will you share – Corporate Social Responsibility. However she said that how you make money is as much as important on how much of money you make. You needn’t feel guilty of how much money you make but you could feel guilty of how you made those money.

So she exhorted Corporates to work on the nuts and bolts and work towards maximizing profits. However she said that there is a Joy of Giving and hence corporate, the wealthy should also share a part of their gains with the have-nots. She said the giving / sharing should be voluntary and driven from within and no efforts should be made to make it mandatory or compulsory. She was referring to the proposal from P Chidambaram ,Finance Minister for leving a CSR Tax of 2% to make it compulsory for Corporates to earmark some part of their profits towards Corporate Social Responsibility program. She said the moment it becomes compulsory, people will find a way to beat the policy and reporting and will become a sham.

She said that instead we should make it fashionable for the wealthy to raise funds and take part in fund raising programs for charity, which mostly happens in the western world. She said we should create situations where the wealthy would be shamed and morally embarrassed to partake their wealth.

She quoted late Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi, who once said that out of every 1 Rupee that is spent by the Government, only 15 paise reaches the people or the reason its intended for. The remaining 85 paise is either siphoned off or frittered away due to in-efficiency (no wonder all these scams). She said that last year the Government of India has spent 2 Billion USD on Rural Development programs and around 4 Billion USD on Urban Development programs. As per Rajiv Gandhi’s formula, nearly 5 billion dollars out of 6 Billion dollars has been siphoned off or frittered away due to inefficiencies in the system. If that be the case, she argued the Government should rather plug the leakage rather than taxing further the people. She argued that it’s the job / responsibility of the Government to take care of the needs (housing, education, healthcare, infrastructure) of its people and not the responsibility of the Corporates. If all the taxes were well spent and in its entirety (without any leakages), we would have plenty of money to address the needs of the downtrodden and the have-nots.

She said that charity must be driven by an inner need and drive and not thro compulsion or regulation. Giving back to the society need not necessarily be in the form of cash, it could also be in the form of service. When she was a student she used to offer her services to the Gates foundation, the Human Rights watch society etc. So she urged that if cant afford to pay, then offer your service – voluntary service for a social cause. She said that there are many fortunate women in India who don’t have to go to work because of rich husbands and exhorted them to offer some bit of their time for some social work / social cause instead of sitting before the idiot box – TV.

When asked about Need vs Greed, she said that it’s a Human tendency to be greedy and there fore people hoard. But she said may be people hoard because of insecurity or the need to live the same high standard of lifestyle till their death and in many cases ensuring that their children, 2nd and 3rd generation also should maintain the same standard of living. Hence they hoard for generations to come. She said that may be the Government could consider levying an Inheritance Tax to prevent people from hoarding.

When asked what she would like to be remembered – as a lawyer or a Miss Universe / Model. She said “why not both”. She said that she will continue to pursue her profession as an International Arbitrator and also walk the ramp as a Model and endorsing brands. She said that long after we would want her family and children to remember that she was a Miss Universe India and will have a story to tell. She concluded by saying that every one of us must live a multi-faceted life and should have stories to tell to family, friends and the society. So she urged people to work towards building stories to be shared.

All in all it was a very fascinating session and an encounter with a celebrity with Beauty & Brain. Will cherish this special encounter and not sure if I will be able to meet another one at close encounter.

May be there is one in the making in my home and only time will tell……

Game of Discounts – Do you know that you are being taken for a ride ?

I overheard a conversation over lunch in my office canteen, where in one person said that when he went to purchase Crackers for Diwali, they were offering 90% discount. He jokingly said “why not offer the remaining 10%” also. The box mentioned MRP Rs.5400/- 90% OFF – Rs.500/- Another one MRP Rs.9000/- 80% discount – Rs.1800/-
I remember when I took a stroll at the Brigade Orion Mall, the Pheonix Mall with my foreign relatives and friends, they too were shocked and pleasantly surprised. Every shop (belive me every one of them) were offering 50%  discounts or Buy 1 take 1 free.
Mind you, they are were all top brands and Global Brands too, not cheap local stuffs… the likes of Levis, Wrangler, Allain Solley, Lee Cooper, Lee, Color Plus, Arvind Brands, Reid & Taylor, Nike, Puma, Addidas, Bata, Pantaloon, Woodlands etc.
Till some time ago, it was only the Indian local vendors who were resorting to this gimmick to attract customers. But this time even the Global brands have adopted this tactic to attract reluctant customers.
So are these vendors really passing off these discounts to the customers. You must be kidding. They are just taking you for a ride and a looooooooooooong ride.
We went in to check the prices. One shirt price tag said – MRP Rs.2600/- 50% off – Rs.1300. Another Jeans price tag said – MRP Rs.3800/-  50% off – Rs.1900. One Shoe’s price tag read – MRP Rs.5400/- 50% off – Rs.2700/- and the list goes on.
These are for all occasions the real price. They have just upped the price and then discounted them to their original value. This was actually validated to me by an ex HR Manager of Big Bazaar. Most of them would never buy them at their MRP.
It was funny to see some shops display “Original discounts”, thus giving away the trick of the trade.
I had recently been to Nasik with me colleague to visit our factory. Our HR friends told us that on our return back to Mumbai we could visit the American Tourister factory enroute and that they have a factory retail outlet over there. We were all enthused as we felt that we could pick up some good Luggages at a cheap price. When we did reach the place it was pouring and it took some effort to get inside the factory and the store.
To our disdain, we were in for shock. The same trick. They had jacked up the price to exhorbitant levels – MRP – 9000/- 50% Off – Rs.4500/-MRP Rs.11000/- 50% discount – Rs5500/- and so on. They were selling at the same price the Retail stores were selling in the cities.
And recently I was tempted to buy a LED 55 inch TV and again went on a exploration drive to check out the prices. One LG 55” LED Smart TV – MRP Rs.201,000/- Ezone offered at Rs.170,000/- Croma offered at Rs.165,000/-, Girias was offering at Rs.155,000/- , LG Shoppe at Rs.149,000/- and another wholesale dealer at Rs.145,000/- I am sure that if I pulled out my Credit Card or dangled a wad of notes the prices would have dropped further.
The same with furniture’s. Look at the number of advertisements offering furniture’s at 70% discounts.
In the past these discounts used to be restricted to festive seasons or sometimes end of season. But to my surprise I find most of them are offering year round discount sale.
In all theses cases whether they are crackers, clothes, shoes, TV, Furniture etc, the manufacturer is fooling the gullible customers or taking them for a ride or they are stacking up huge margins (anyway not sure most customers wouldn’t ever buy at MRP rates).
One shop keeper confessed to me, “what to do sir, if I don’t display discounts no one will come into my shop. So I have to play the game of the trade”. Another one told me “ I use this as a tactic to draw the customers into my territory (shop)”. Its quite true. Many a time especially in the Global Brands you will find that after you enter the shop the number of items on sale with discounts will hardly be a few when compared to the others.
Its time the gullible Indian customers realized that nothing ever comes free. All these discounts are actually been funded by the gullible customers in one way or the other. Its time that we come out of the rut and the trap and allow market to restore its sense of balance. Its time also that we had some regulatory body or the Consumer Court must take suo moto action and put an end to this Game of Discounts.
It’s a pity that many a genuine vendors are getting lost in this myriad of fakesters and compelled to adopt unethical practices to stay in the game. And customers on their part will not shop without any discounts.

When will this farce end…. Or will it not end at all… only time will tell. Afterall – you reap only what you sow !

All about the b…..tter half ………..

Congress had the last laugh – thanks to the Indian Crab syndrome

So what was all this fuss about. The Congress party managers must be laughing their way to their hearts content. Who ever came up with this idea of “economic reforms” at this juncture must be a great visionary. The talk today in media, televison & newspapers and in society is all about survival of the minority Congress government, the aya rams and the gaya rams.
The Coal Gate scam has taken a back seat and is no more an election issue. The economic reforms – diesel price hike , LPG & FDI was only meant to deflect the attention of the public from Coal Gate and wow Congress suceeded even beyond their expectations. It was a brilliant political stroke, which took the winds out of the opposition.
So what if Mamta quits, there is the other M’s – Mayawati & Mulayam falling over each other to support Congress. The Congress is even more stronger and bolder than it was ever before. On the day that Mamta announced her decision to quit the government the Government issued a notification on FDI in Retail. It was a bold decision and a slap on Mamta’s face. Dr Manmohan Singh had already done his calculations and homework and even feigned a threat when he said “if he have to gone down, we will go down fighting”.

The BJP which was licking its fingers and itching to go in for an election was caught on the backfoot and not the Congress. To Congress, Mamta’s exit is a blessing in disguise and to BJP a huge embarassment.

Why and how did the Congress suceed in turning a calamity into an opportunity. The reason – Indian Crab syndrome. It is said that Indian crabs, if left in  a basket, are never able to escape. Each time one crab tries to get out of the basket another one would pull him down! This is the Indian crab syndrome!

Every politician be it Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar, Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Mulayam, Jayalalitha, Mayawati and even Lalu started nursing ambitions of becoming the next Prime Minister. At a time, when they had an opportunity to defeat the Government and sieze the opportunity, the politicians within the Opposition were bickering within themselves as to who would become the Prime Minister. When unity was the need of the hour, personal ambitions came to the forefront and every politician was scheming in such a way that they did not want others to suceed. Nitish did not want Modi, Modi did not want Nitish, Mulayam did not want Mayawati to get closer to Congress, Mayawati did not want Mulayam to sieze the opportunity, Karunanidi did not want Jayalalitha to sieze the opportunity and hence he joined the bandh. Since he joined the bandh, Jaya opted out of it. Nitish siezing an opportunity suddenly wants to cosy with anyone who will give Bihar a special status (read – make me the Prime Minister) and so on….
It suited Congress perfectly and they played the old British game of “Divide & Rule”. Mulayam vs Mayawati. Karuna Nidihi vs Jayalalitha, Nitish vs Modi etc.
It has emboldened the Congress even more now. They are sure of regaining power a 3rd time because of a divided opposition, fighting for power within. You will  find more scams and more loot of countrys economy and the common man on the streets will continue to be a hapless spectator and coughing more in terms of taxes and prices for his survival.
This is true not only in politics, but also in Corporate world, families and societies at large. Its not that “too many are chasing too few”, but its Greed, selfishness and survival at others cost that is becoming the hall mark of the Indian Society.

Is there a hope, only time will say……….

Is the word “GRATITUDE” missing from todays dictionary

The recent political developments at the Centre is a paradox of sort. Congress has only around 206 seats and way below the majority mark. For it to survive its dependent on parties like TMC, DMK, NCP etc. But the way the Congress party has been behaving that its got an absolute majority and been roughshodding over its allies in the UPA. For its survival it is totally dependant on its allies and if they pull the rug, the game is over for the Congress.
However time and again Congress has been indifferent, insensitive and non-chalant to its allies. Behaving as if these allies dont exist. They dont find it imperative to consult them and take them into confidence on important issues (fuel price hike, disinvestment, FDI etc.) and pass unilateral decisions and then expect them to rally around them and support them.
Well this is true not just in political circles but in real life too. How often we find such characters in Corporate world, at home, in society, amongst friends.

Departments, bossess, colleagues are dependant on other departments, subordinates, colleagues for sucess but ignore them and treat them with disdain. Take all the credit for sucess and blame the others for failures.
Children, spouses, family members dependant on bread winner but treat them with utter disdain, disrespect and indifference. As if they are born to serve others.

Similarly with friends, school mates etc.

Many a times colloboration, silence is taken as diffidence, weaness and submission by the other party. Its time that people realise that they owe their sucess to the silent supporter and pay due credit and respect to them, or is it too much of an expectation.

Or has the word “GRATITUDE” disappeared from the dictionary.!!!!!!!

To Retire or not to Retire….. Sachin

Sunil Gavaskar once mentioned that “one should quit when people ask ‘why’ and not ‘why not'”. Sadly Sachin isnt listening to the original Little Master. Every conversation on cricket be it in the newspaper, TV Channels, Online Chat forums, cricket stadiums and all around the globe, one question on everyones lips is “when is Sachin calling it quits”.
He has achieved every conceivable milestone, reached the pinnacle of his life and even safely perched himself in Indian Politics but sadly he doesnt think its time for him to kiss goodbye to Indian cricket. He isnt getting younger and is one of the oldest serving cricketer in the International arena. His form is wavering and the manner of his dismissals – bowled is a pointer that his reflexes are waning. He needs to play more matches but his body isnt able to hold on and he needs plenty of rests inbetween and that hinders his match preparedness and his performance.
From what started as a whisper its now turning out loud and clear that his fans dont want him to wane into obscurity but want him to quit on a high. The damage is already done and before it erodes his image any further, Sachin must call it quits. Will he dare like Saurav did announce his retirement before hand and finish of his career with a wonderful series like Saurav Ganguly did in his farewell Australian series.
No matter who you are and what ever position you may have reached, a day will come when one has to bid good bye and Sachin may well pay heed to his illustrious colleagues like Saurav, Rahul and VVS to hang his boots sooner than later.

Well will the Little Master pay heed…… only time will tell………..

VVS Lakshman bids adieu ……. Age doesnt matter in Sports

Its ironical that after he was named for the 2 tests against New Zealand at Home and he has been training hard for the test, VVS Lakshman suddenly announces his retirement from International Cricket. There is something amiss here and we need to read between the lines.
He has been one of the most reliable cricketer. “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.” “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”.
How many matches has he saved or won for India and yet he has perenially been on the chopper block with a democales sword hanging on him always. Our selectors have been grossly unfair to him and have hastened his end. No doubt Saurav Ganguly rightly said “age shouldnt matter, only performance should matter”.

There has been an undue haste to dissolve the Fab Four by Dhoni and his cronies. Saurav, Rahul and VVS could have played for some more time and could have had a graceful exit. Saurav was in the peak of his form in the last year of his career and yet he was forced to wind up.

Mary Kom, Rogerer Federrer, Andre Agassi have all shown that age doesnt matter and people can maintain peak performance well beyond their age…………

Tyranny of Justice

Wonder if Anna Hazare is so naive that he doesnt realise that he is fighting a losing battle or is he also an astute politician in the making, by riding the popular wave of “anti-corruption”. The key for behaviour modification is “consequences of behavior or detterance”. There is no consequence of behaviour or detterance for misconduct in India.
There was so much hue & cry with the media baying for his blood – DGP Rathore goes scot free and it was funny reading that his pension has been restored.  Similarly all the furore over Suresh Kalmadi has gone in vain, with CBI litterally exhonerating him by not chargesheeting him in the CWG Scam. The media knows the where abouts of Kanda , he manages to fix an appointment for his surrender but the police arent able to trace him.

Isnt it a tyranny of justice that “justice delayed is justice denied”. Its time that our Judiciary woke up and stood up……….
